American news sources are calling it a "mending fences" tour, but a gentle touch works better if you're not Edward Scissorhands. W and Schroeder met yesterday in Mainz, and the security measures that the US demanded were so insane that schools, public transportation, and dozens of flights from the airport had to be cancelled, 5 major highways closed down all day, and no one within snipering distance of the Prez was allowed to open the door or window of their own houses, lest they invite sniper fire of their own. Sheesh. Major politicians and members of various royal families come to Germany all the flipping time, but they don't require the binding and gagging of major thoroughfares and the enforcement of temporary house arrest on millions of civilians. Mending fences, indeed.

It's kind of embarassing, isn't it? Not surprising, though. W is not a well-liked man around the world. I'm surprised he's traveling at all.
