red moon rising

So, friends. A writing exercise know as stream of consciousness. Here is the unedited (but corrected for typos) result of exactly 15 minutes of my brainwaves:

I saw the sunset and the moonrise tonight from my car windows. I was going in exactly the right direction - east-northeast, so the sun set right in my rearview window and I got to watch it turn into a flaming orb and tint the sky flamingo pink as it heaved a tired sigh and kicked back for a night of rest (or a day of lighting up far-flung parts of the world).

And then right in front of me, dead center, came the moon, peeking over the horizon shyly at first and then boldly, rising huge and red and fierce and beautiful. I saw the man in the moon, I saw blue cheese, I saw hundreds of melodramatic scenes being played out against the backdrop of craters and seas. It was just shy of full tonight. I forgot to drive for a second, barely managing to stay in the right lane. I was transfixed... which is a lovely sentiment for a dimestore novel but less practical when you're piloting a vehicle at 65 mph down a curvy and hilly Wisconsin highway.

I wanted to know whether the moon was waxing or waning. Here Captain Hook, Celestial Navigator of the Full Moon Hash, informs me that the moon was full yesterday. Waning it is, then. Captain Hook also informs me that it's the beaver moon this time. (Props to anyone who can tell me what that means, or name any other brand of full moon, without googling.)

(Insert cheesy metaphor about starting over, the sun going down on one chapter of life and the moon rising on the next, etc.)

Blue Moon!

Also a tasty beer and a dandy Nanci Griffith song.
