State of the Reunion Address (or: "I'm Coming Hooooome!")

Visiting the Salon:

  • Impetus for some people to get their hair cut: "It's been 6 (or 8, or 12) weeks since the last one."
  • Impetus for me to get my hair cut: "I'm flying to the US in a few days." Works every time, for some reason.
Things that don't impress me:
  • You let your bad mood affect the whole building.
  • You "pimp your ride" to the extent that I feel you coming before I see you.
  • You think it's a good idea to stand on my street in the middle of the summer, in the middle of the night, and scream bloody murder for no apparent reason other than your .15 blood alchohol level and the voluminous clouds of fruit-flavored tobacco you have recently inhaled while sitting at a bar and staring creepily into my kitchen window.
  • You talk about your newly-minted PhD as if you were the only person in the world to ever have written a dissertation and I should suddenly fall to my knees and worship the dissertation-writingest, PhD-holdingest Greek God(dess) on the planet. Pfft. (OK, if you're my friend, I will rejoice with you, but otherwise, I really don't care, OK?)
  • You drink beer and talk on your cell phone while riding a bike down a busy pedestrian zone.
  • You promise me something five freaking weeks ago and keep putting it off... and putting it off... and putting it off... until I want to wring your necks. All of you. Like so many chickens.
Things that do impress me:
  • Well, pretty much everything else, I guess. I am not terribly difficult to impress. :-) You know, things like particularly adept handling of chopsticks, a really nice parallel parking job, keeping me supplied with chocolate, a crinkle-eyed smile, mewling kittens, a good store of trivia... I like the little things in life. Just no banshee imitations on my street at 4 am, and we will get along fine. :-)

Have I mentioned yet:

  • That I am flying home in less than 48 hours??
  • That I get to hear a really fantastic group play live in concert on Friday?
  • Camp camp campcampcampcamp!
  • That I get to meet two "new" friends and lots and lots of old ones?
  • That I am really freaking scared about the work thing, but trying to cover it up by making up big words like "thingamadoohickey" and passing it all off as a joke?
  • HHHOOOMMMEEEEE!!!!!

Thanks guys. :-) You're awesome. And yeah... I'm getting a tad bit excited! Next time I come home I hope I can make another "grand Midwest road trip" and come see you on the farm. But until then, virtual hugs! XOXO

Jess,
Even if you are scared about your professional "thingamadoohickey," I'm confident that it will go the way it's supposed to for you! Now, I can be confident for you because it's not me, but know that you have many people who love you and that you have many callings even if this doesn't go exactly the way you think it should.

And, just in case you go past my area on your way to or from Chicago, stop by and say hi! (Though I know you are very booked, so I understand if it doesn't work out.) I'll be thinking about you either way!

Hi Jodi, thanks for the vote of confidence. You know, this is a good way to look at it: if I mess up spectacularly and get myself booted or worse, well, half of me has been hoping for that all along, so I really can't complain. :-) You're totally right, there are lots of other things I could do!

I don't think my route will take me to your parts this time, sadly... but maybe we can arrange it for next time! It was so fun last time I saw you. :-) (I am not booked in the sense of "better things to do than visit you", just booked in the sense of "I don't think I could possibly fit in one more visit without me or the car collapsing.") :-)
