Our European Vacation

I just realized that between August 2005 and June 2006, I have 4 weeks of vacation, and I have not yet decided what to do with them. Originally I thought I would desperately need to go home at some point during that time, and it's true that I would very much like to see my niece again before she's all grown up, but now that I am feeling more settled here the deep, gnawing homesickness has dwindled down to a dull ache. Plus, it costs a lot to be flying to Minneapolis all the time, and my vacation budget range is somewhere between "ridiculously inexpensive" and "dirt cheap."

And where can you travel for ridiculously cheap but... Europe! And here I am. And here you should be, too. Come visit me! Plan a trip to Europe and I will join you for a week (and two weekends) of it. I'm up for anything: the canals of Venice, the Prague Castle, the Baltic Sea, debauchery in Amsterdam (although that one would be admittedly out of character for me). Pick a city, or several cities. I can do as much of the trip planning as you need and want me to-- unless you are more savvy about traveling in Europe than I am, in which case I am quite content to grovel at your feet and be your vacation disciple. Most likely you DO have a better sense of direction than I do, so we'll just go ahead and rely on you for that part.

I mean this for real, and the invitation is open to all! Come alone, bring a friend, bring your grandmother. (However, for those whom I haven't met personally--unless a mutual friend can vouch for your personal integrity and lack of creepiness-- you will have to pass a rigorous screening and background check.*) Any takers? Even Christmas is fair game.

*No scary psychopaths need apply.

Oooh! That sounds great!

This is so funny. Well, not "ha ha" funny, but just the other day, I was despairing that time is passing me by and I don't seem to be seeing any of the places I dream of seeing--what if one day I wake up and I'm old and feeble and it's all too late?! But trying to plan a trip with friends seems impossible. Everyone's all about work, work, work, and I thought: I'm either going to have to go traveling alone (which I've never found terribly fun since there's no one to share the experience with) or I'm going to have to send out this desperate "We are GOING traveling" post on my blog.

After that very long meander above however, I now sheepishly state that, though I would *love* to join Jessica's European Tour, it's just too far (i.e., too, er, $$$) from Japan!

You've renewed my determination to travel however--thank you. This year, I am *going* somewhere, damn it!

Man, you got my hopes up and then dashed them to the floor... but I can totally understand the whole "only having enough money to travel on this continent" story. Maybe I will have to move to Japan in order to meet you. :-)

I don't know if I can pass the scary psychopath screening - if you ever get to Sicily, I`d love to show you around (and show off my new Italian vocabulary). No, just kidding. I can recommend Paris, if you've never been there. London, however, is not worth the crazy exchange rate. And, apart from August, I absolutely adore the Provence region of France. It's definitely worth a trip. To sum it up, you should definitely visit France with the people you're joining vor the European vacation. Isn't it also an American tradition to visit France once in your life? See 'Daisy Miller' and 1,000 other 'great American novels'...

Oh, shoot, I'm sorry! I didn't mean it to be a "get your hopes up and then dash them" comment. Your whole post was such an exciting suggestion and I just wanted to share my own traveler's enthusiasm.

Doch doch! I think London is worth it. Yeah, it's expensive, but what place in Europe (other than Eastern Germany, that is) WON'T be expensive?

BTW, I am back and full of stories that I may or may not publish on my blog :)

Oh, if only the girls could all meet you there! I thought that Chicago was a stretch, but it happened! Anything is possible, right? Amy
