labyrinth

The retreat center stands in the middle of the Sonoran desert, surrounded by rocky craigs and majestic saguaro and blooming desert vegetation. I've lived in the desert a few times but I don't think I've ever seen it bloom before.

The labyrinth here is modeled after the early 13th-century labyrinth at the Notre Dame Cathedral at Chartres. I tell ya, the medieval mystics knew something about rhythm and trust and winding paths that always reach the center.

When you're walking the labyrinth, you hardly know whether you're coming or going, because you're constantly changing directions.

I learned some lessons in there - trust the system. Look around you and enjoy the view. It can be beautiful to take the long way. Sometimes even the desert blooms.
