The wretched refuse of my teeming mind

Snippets of Jess, in list form:

  • Been working out a lot lately. The marathon idea is starting to wiggle around in my brain again... we'll see how the summer shapes up. I'll keep you posted, because I know you're just dying for this to turn into a running blog (ha!).
  • The floods here are receding. The floodplains are starting to resemble "plains" again, and the trees have their trunks back.
  • Apologies to Heto, whom I once roundly mocked for routinely wearing two pairs of socks. I have some seriously cold feet now, for some reason (circulation problem?), and wear two pairs of thick wool socks plus slippers when I am at home. Still I wake up with cold feet (despite socks and two thick comforters!). Is this psychosomatic?
  • We sang the Mozart mass today, with professional soloists and orchestra. It rocked. I want to sing more Mozart! However, it looks like I won't make it to choir anymore, due to our intense programming schedule in May and the choir's summer hiatus. This makes me sad. Note to self: find church choir to join next fall!
  • In the interest of simplicity, I am eschewing the grocery store for a while in favor of using up all of the weird and orphaned remnants in my pantry. I am only buying produce for the next two weeks to complement the Culinary Eccentricity That is My Pantry. Today's entree: split-pea soup with fresh garlic and lemon juice. Yummy.
  • I've decided that the full moon affects my hormones every bit as much as my menstrual cycle does. Anyone else feel the effects of the full moon?
  • 137 days!!!!!! That's how much longer I live here. Expect to see this countdown periodically. :-)
  • Easter can be found here, sacramental style.

Christ the King Lutheran in Iowa City has a very nice church choir, and you're invited.

You can cross "find church choir to join" off your list now.

Ooh! Thanks for the invitation.
Is this one of those choirs where you have to have actual musical talent, or will they take a "merely aspiring to blend in" voice too?

Funny how I already feel more at home there than here. :-)

137 (now 136) days! I will look forward to watching that number shrink with your periodic updates. I am sooo looking forward to you being only three hours away from here and my and having an actual chance to meet and hang out with you in person, my best blogging friend!

P.S. I'm totally with you about the full moon. I can really see it now that I work with so many students each day. They are *so* much grumpier around the time of the full moon. Everyone in my office agrees.

Yeah, the wearing-of-two-pairs-of-socks may have been weird at the time, but dude! German heating systems SUCK and I was perpetually cold. Even in April. Maybe even especially in April, because you expect it to be warm but it's NOT! So yeah, welcome to my world :)

"Merely aspiring to blend in" voices are what we like best.

Is it weird that I'm feeling bittersweet *for* you about your permanent return home? Seriously. I'm so thrilled that you'll be here all the time! But I'm also a teensy bit sad for you (in advance) that you'll miss Germany a little. No?

I've so often raced ahead of time, only to find that I look back and miss the previous stage a bit.

I think I already know your response! :) And so, we will simply welcome you home with a big party! :)

Love, Amy
