So I'm usually a morning-shower, wash my hair every day kind of person.
I really was not happy to hear my alarm this morning, because it has been too many days in a row of too early and too much and too stressful, and I just wanted to sleep for another week or so. But Steffi was visiting (hooray!) and she was going to need the bathroom after me, so I had to drag my sleepy carcass out of bed and yawn my way through a shower.
It wasn't until I was on my way to work later on that I realized that in my insufficient wakefulness, I had soaped up, but forgotten to wash my hair. At the time it felt like a minor catastrophe and I thought about going back and finishing the job, but I had an appointment to pick up the rest of my new contacts at the ophthamologist's, and there were veritable stockpiles of things waiting for me at work due to the unfortunate lack of internet connection in the office the day before. So I marched bravely onward...
And had a good hair day!
That's a bit of a shocker because in my mind, I just have the kind of hair that needs to be washed every day in order to be presentable (high wilderness treks being the exception). This has simply always been the case.
Am I going to have to rethink my entire identity? Will I have to learn new haircare rules? Help me out here, people... how often do you wash your hair? Will I be hygenically challenged if I don't every day?

Every third day, but I comb it in the shower with a little bit of conditioner every day. I have long, dry, curly hair, and that's really the only routine that works for me.
I have done the "hair thing" a couple of different ways. I had about two years where I showered every other day at night (actually, the 2nd year was my first at sem). I had really long hair then, so I could do it with less greasy obviousness.
For two years (middler and intern) I showered every day in the morning, but only washed my hair every other day...conditioning it on the days I didn't.
I have since showered and shampood almost every day, although I have a day here or there where I skip it (it is better for my skin). But, I can no longer to a routine that has any variance day-by-day because it just became way too confusing. I'd spend every morning in the shower trying to remember if I had washed my hair the day before or not.
I appreciate the people who can go a day or two without washing and have it look good...mine was not as attractive on the days I didn't shampoo.
(Is there a rule about a comment being longer than a post?)
I've been reading more and more about how it is much healthier to only shampoo your hair once or twice a week, as your hair needs to retain it's natural oils that are so easily stripped away.
Do you also know about the tip of making sure that the conditioner only touches the middle and ends of your hair....and then rinse it out with as cold of water as you can handle? It helps it to retain the moisture and really makes hair shine. :) Amy
Jen -
Or you could go hippie and stop washing it. . . after three months, apparently the oils take over and your hair never gets that oily coat of nastiness.
Try it and let me know! (I'll send you a scarf to wear around your head for those three months)
I used to be a wash-daily kind of person, but now with my pink hair, I'm a wash-ever-other-day and rinse-in-between kind of person. The only problem is that I have short, funky hair, which means a lot of styling product.
Never more than every second day since my hairdresser told me to do so. Washing every day removes the natural oils and yes, the "body" - which is why you had that good hair day :)
Girls, this was fascinating to me. Thank you for the marvelous input!
So... what I did today... that was not laziness. Oh no. I am merely saving up those precious oils for a really good hair day tomorrow! Right, that's it.
I am getting a haircut tomorrow, and I plan to ask for blonde and red Straehnchen (highlights? stripes? what's the word here, German speakers?). We'll see how it turns out. They'll make a German of me yet!
