They are not so excited. That is, I haven't met anyone yet who is excited--probably the people on the more conservative side of things are whooping it up right now. The people in his hometown were also pretty psyched, but probably more because of the publicity than actual personal excitement. Yeah, Tom Wilson said it well-- Germans are not very nationalistic, and have an easy time separating their political opinions from national pride. I think this pope will DEFINITELY not be as beloved at home as the last one.

I was hoping they'd elect me. I think that would've been cool - I wanted to ride in the plexiglass car and wear the cool costumes and make a bunch of ex cathedra pronouncements.

I never get to make pronouncements at my job. :(

You could make pronouncements on your blog, maybe! You might even get a few disciples that way. Until you start pronouncing about Kool-Aid; that tends to scare people off.

Even before I type this, I know this is going to sound completely ignorant. Yes, yes, I realize the selection process hasn't been a piece of cake...but, dude, why do they always have to be so old to start off with? I mean, don't they want to prolong an experience similar to what just went on recently, like for at least a couple of decades?

Rachel. I don't think you sound ignoramt at all. I wondered the same thing, too. 78?!?! They just elected a 78-year-old guy to the most stressful job in the world next to air-traffic-controller? What were they thinking? People are calling him the "transitional pope", or the "interim pope" which, given his ultra-conservative bent, I don't find too unsettling. :-)
