I've been tagged by Rachel with this music meme... It's kind of an honor. Thanks!
What is the total amount of music files on your computer?
I am too lazy to go look (and probably incompetent enough that I wouldn't be able to figure it out even if I did)... it’s definitely not much, though. I have never downloaded anything from the Internet onto my laptop, because it doesn’t have Internet access.
What was the last CD you bought?
I honestly can’t remember, it was that long ago. Shoestring budget and all.
What was the last song you listened to before reading this message?
Ooh, that one I can answer. It was “Mystery,” by the Indigo Girls, the last song on my current rollerblading CD. "I could go crazy on a night like tonight / when summer's beginning to give up her fight / and every thought's a possibility..." Wrong season, maybe, but timeless just the same.
Write down five songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you:
Bach’s Cello Suites. This one has a story behind it: Cynical Ex-Boyfriend and I were sitting on his couch, after yet another exhausting argument about nothing at all. Fed up with the onslaught of petty negativity, I felt something snap. I turned to him and demanded quietly, “Isn’t there anything that you just like—unconditionally?” Without a word CEB stood up, pulled a CD off the rack and put in Bach’s Cello Suites. I fell in love with the Cello Suites, but out of love with him not long after this episode. Too exhausting.
Indigo Girls. I know it asks "which song," but sorry, it just doesn't work that way. I think the Indigo Girls are sort of one big long song in my mind anyway. That was supposed to be a compliment. So many of their songs (well, OK, Emily's more than Amy's, if you are forcing me to choose) have held my hand through one crisis or another that I really can't pick just one. But I will mention some notables:
-Strange Fire
-Closer to Fine
-Ghost
-Watershed
-Secure Yourself
-Love Will Come to You
-Get out the Map
OK, so that was just the tip of the iceberg, but it'll do. Those of you who are on my wavelength here don't need a longer list, and those of you who aren't, don't want one.
Set Me Free, written by Erik Lips, as performed by my friends Matt and Charlie. Something about this song puts it in a category by itself for me. Could the fact that the melody spans three octaves contribute to its transcendence? Anyway, this song could inspire religious awe in a guinea pig.
We Built This City, Starship. There is something absolutely primordially motivating about this song for me. If I am considering whether to go toward the light, play me this song and I will want to live.
Halleluias, Rufus Wainwright/ Leonard Cohen. This was love at first sight. Or first hearing. Whatever. I wouldn't mind if Rufus Wainwright decided he'd like to sing me to sleep. Every night. Forever.
Who are you going to pass this on to (3 persons) and why?
Hmm...this is fun! OK, I am going to pick people whose taste in music is somewhat a mystery to me. Amber, Hedwig and PPB... tag, you're it!

I love Rufus Wainright. My favorite song is "I eat dinner," song with Dido. It's a great self-indulgent pity party song.
I meant "sung with Dido."
i'm definitely on your Indigo Girls wavelength.
Mission accomplished.
Done!
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing and also passing this thing along--good job! The story behind Bach’s Cello Suites was kind of sad, but at least you came away from that experience with something good. I do love Bach.
