So I have finally hit my inactivity threshold. There is only so much desk-job sloth that I can handle before I start chomping at the bit. In this case I don't mean the itching need to get myself across the ocean, or the niggling desire to leave this two-horse town (that's a given), but to get my muscles moving, blood circulating, new impulses to the brain. It is time.
I haven't found a running partner here, and somehow I just can't manage to go regularly alone, but Heather said she'd walk with me. The first time, I dragged her out in search of a shopping center that eluded us like a much-needed oasis. But we walked for a couple of nice hours, into a headwind that never turned in a tailwind, and came home refreshed and windburned (and now she is as enthusiastic as I am). It was a holiday that day anyway, and the stores would have been closed--I just wanted to find civilization. We did see a cool sock store. Kinda reminded me of Ginny Weasley... So far we've gone south, north and west. I suppose it's off to the land of the rising sun next.
Walking is nice. It takes a bit longer to get where you're going, of course, and quite a lot longer to achieve the yummy pulse-racing, nerves-twitching, yay-I-did-something feeling, but it comes eventually. I am hoping that, in addition to changing the air in my lungs and saving my behind from the otherwise-inevitable desk-job sprawl, our new power-walking routine will ameliorate at least a bit of my directional impotence. Seriously, I suck at finding my way around. I did not inherit my dad's utter navigational confidence or internal compass. Sigh. But the more you get around, the better you know your city. And you might find a cool sock store.

Ten cents to What, you too? for ameliorate.
Did writing about walking take the place of actual walking, yesterday? :)
I actually did quite a bit of walking, but it was more of a loping, looking-in-store-windows kind of walk. It lasted almost 3 hours, though, plus the walk from the station to the church to the mall and all back again. And then there was the walk from the bahnhof to my apartment. Does that count?
