Why I (heart) Chicago

So this week, thousands of Lutherans converge on Chicago's Navy Pier and influence the religious balance of the city for a while. It's fun to see the swarms of folks with their red backpacks and yellow nametags and big smiles. Yesterday the voting members made a very wise decision in re-electing our very wise Big Bishop.

As I was walking back to my car last night after our seminary reception at the assembly, I was reminded of another reason why I like Chicago so much. Ahead of me, a young guy was limping along, favoring one foot, working visibly hard for each step. In his right hand was a foot cast and a pair of crutches. I had to ask why he was carrying the crutches instead of vice versa, and the subsequent conversation yielded the following information about my new friend: He's a ship's captain on Navy Pier who unfortunately broke his foot last night and decided he couldn't NOT come to work this morning, so he came in and worked his 13-hour day, on his feet all day, and was now limping home. And he's also a licensed massage therapist and writes books on holistic psychology.

I love Chicago.

But that doesn't explain why he wasn't using the crutches.... or am I missing something here?

Oh yeah. I forgot to share the solution to that little mystery: he was not using the crutches because... he hates them. :-)
