Isla del Encanto

Vacation!! It's been a while since I could rightfully say that I was on vacation, and wow, is it fun. Despite the 3-hour plane delay and resulting rental car misadventure, there have been a whole host of great highlights so far:

  • Experiencing the very tropical backyard garden paradise of Julia, a plant pathologist and extended family member of Jody's
  • Visting Jody's cousin's mushroom farm - fascinating stuff!
  • Passing through the "park of the pigeons," where hordes of nearly domesticated pigeons lined up to eat out of my hand.
  • Trying all sorts of new food, like shark (made me feel like I was inverting the food chain somehow), mofongo (mashed green plantains - yum!), empanadillas, PR's own Medalla beer, fresh passion fruit, Caribbean-style lychees, bright pink cactus berries
  • Being stung by a jellyfish my first time going swimming (the radiating pain wasn't exactly a highlight, but I am growing rather fond of the story and the scar!)
  • Driving on extremely narrow two-lane roads, slaloming around wandering cows and lazy dogs
  • Visiting a "desert-forest" right next to the ocean
  • And above all, wonderful hospitality from family, friends, and strangers.
