It's Kneipenmusiknacht!
This means that all of the bars stay open late and invite live musicians and spill their contents out onto the sidewalks (the contents of the bars, that is, not the live musicians). And people - mostly of the young and intoxicated variety - roam the streets with beer bottles in hand, depositing them onto the nearest flat surface when empty, or in many cases just whenever they (the young intoxicated people) get sick of them (the bottles). The nearest flat surface appears to be, in many cases, the middle of the fricking road. Good thing I don't have a car. Remind me not to ride my bike for a week or so.
It was on Kneipenmusiknacht a year and a half ago that my poor little bike was violated. I bear an unredeemable grudge against Kneipenmusiknacht. Not to mention the fact that it is Saturday night at 9:39 pm and I am in the office firming up details for my presentation tomorrow (*ahem*and blogging*cough*). At least it's a good group. That helps me pretend I get a day off.
I felt like an enormous fuddy duddy just now as I slalomed through sidewalk cafes and overflowing bars on my way to... work. But at least I opened up my window to more immediately enjoy the badly off-key and heavily accented covers of "Manic Monday" and "Video Killed the Radio Star" that are being offered up by the live musicians in the courtyard. Isn't there some international quality control for cover bands? Or maybe this is actually Karaoke for the Musically Impaired Night and I missed the sign...

Oh! Kneipenmusiknacht! I never actually went to any of the events for the Kneipenmusiknacht-s when I was there, but I always wanted to. Something always came up, or maybe it was just that I didn't have anyone to attend them with. Hmm.
Anyway, good luck today/tomorrow! Watch out for shattered glass!
