Heto started the reminiscing, so here it is... some of the highlights of "Thanksgivings I have known."
In my childhood, we had Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma Jo's house-- turkey with all the trimmings, and always her amazing butternut squash. And then we also ate dinner at Grandma Betty and Grandpa John's house. Now I wonder how we did both of those. Clearly I belonged to a time-traveling spaceclan.
1998 marked my first tofurkey. I think I opted to eat the real thing, though this may have been during my brief vegetarian stint,k in which case the tofurkey would have been the way to go. Seminary Thanksgivings must have been fun-- those were the years when I had an actual date on national holidays.
Thanksgivings 2002-2006 were the Germany Years. DIY Thanksgiving in Munich was fun --I whipped up an entire Thanksgiving feast (two different turkeys-- they don't come in "family-sized" over there) and spent hours trying to figure out how to talk about pilgrims and Native Americans with my very limited German skills. I think the second year, Meghan and I organized a potluck. Yum!
Thanksgiving 2004: was just after I met Heto! I don't think we were even really friends yet. :-)
Thanksgiving 2005: Um, I had to look this one up. My instinct was to imagine that it probably sucked, and that I spent it along with a turkey sandwich. But as it turns out, history (i.e. this blog) indicates that I got to go HOME for Thanksgiving. Yay. That week also involved a roadtrip to Iowa to visit the folks who eventually became my new roommates when I returned from exile.
OK, this is getting long. Anyone still with me?
Thanksgiving 2006-2007: Living in Iowa City. I think I went home for actual Thanksgivings, though my roomies and I (two different sets of them) celebrated too. Again with the tofurkey.
This year is still up for grabs, but I'm staying in Chicago. Anyone need an invitation?
