a short course in German history

Ya know, after 4 years in Germany, you'd think I'd have had it drilled into my thick skull that November 9th is somethin' special. Namely, the "Day of Destiny" (Schicksalstag), because of all of the crazy-important historical stuff that has taken place on that one fateful Gregorian day. To wit:

  • 1848: Robert Blum, who had been working to create a constitution for a unified Germany, was executed in Austria --despite his supposed parliamentary immunity-- and with him died the revolutionary dreams of a generation.
  • 1918: The "Weimar Republic" (Deutsches Reich) was proclaimed, and Germany became a republic.
  • 1923: A failed coup attempt in Munich --the Beer Hall Putsch-- by the Nazi Party, who would succeed in having Hitler actually *elected* chancellor just ten years later.
  • 1938: Kristallnacht, the night of shattered glass.
  • 1989: The Berlin Wall opens.
  • 2007: iPhone hits Germany
A fateful day, indeed.
