Our meme-alicious blogtreat for today is brought to you by... um, somebody... via my friend Silent.
It's an easy one:
1.) Find the nearest book of more than 123 pages. Check. It's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver (and family). I've been wanting and meaning to read this book for a while, and yesterday, the library helpfully obliged. So far the book is full of her characteristically poetic prose, with some gorgeous passages that make me want to call people up randomly and subject them to my oral interpretation. Barbara Kingsolver is pretty much my literary idol (how's that for a reality-show pitch?). If I were a writer, I would want my voice to echo hers. Her words are like coming home.
2.) Find page 123. Check -- it's right here between 122 and 124, exactly where I thought it'd be. We are *so* on the same wavelength, Barb and I.
3.) Read the first five sentences. Mmm... scrumptious. You should hear this! What's your phone number?
4.) Post the next three sentences. Excellent. Here goes. Wait, I need to embed it a little, because the three sentences surrounding it are gorgeous too. I put the "real" three sentences in italics, for you letter-of-the law types out there:
- "But "locally grown' is a denomination whose meaning is incorruptible. Sparing the transportation fuel, packaging, and unhealthy additives is a compelling part of the story, but the plot goes well beyond that. Local food is a handshake deal in a community gathering place. It involves farmers with first names, who show up week after week. It means an open-door policy on the fields, where neighborhood buyers are welcome to come have a look, and pick their food from the vine. 'Local' is farmers growing trust."

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Barbara Kingsolver as well. Did I tell you about when I went to her book reading/signing for this particular book at Women and Children First? It was great. I was so excited to meet her. When I got to the front of the line all I could come up with to say was, "I know you've probably heard this a million times, but you are my favorite author." And, her response was so lovely and kind. She said, "Well, I've never heard it from you before. Thank you" and then she signed my book. And, its probably a bit silly, but I think because of the anxious energy I even got a bit teary eyed.
